Finasteride Hair Loss Treatment Powder,
Proscar Hair Loss Treatment Powder,
Finasteride is an effective treatment for hair loss in men at 1 mg per day. The huge bummer is that the same dose of finasteride was found to be ineffective for treating hair loss in women. Well, some researchers didn’t give up on finasteride and tested slightly higher doses for women.
Finasteride belongs to a class of medications known as 5alpha-reductase inhibitors and as such is used for the treatment revolving around type 2 5-AR based occurrences.
How does finasteride work?
Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which decreases the amount of DHT in the body. DHT is a hormone that has been linked to hair loss in women and men.
The downside is that finasteride is also teratogenic—meaning that if you get pregnant while taking it, it may cause birth defects. For this reason, premenopausal women who are taking finasteride should use reliable contraception, and pregnant women should not use it.
What dosage of finasteride works for women?
In a recent study, both premenopausal and postmenopausal women with hair loss who had been treated for more than 3 months with 2.5 mg per day of finasteride showed improvement. In fact, almost 30% showed slight improvement and 65% showed significant improvement. This dosage was “well-tolerated,” meaning it didn’t cause many side effects.
Do higher doses work better for hair loss in women?
If 2.5 mg a day works, is 5 mg a day better? Not necessarily.
Observational studies of individual women have shown that taking 5 mg of finasteride a day improved hair density and thickness, but the women in the studies had several unwanted side effects, including decreased libido, breast tenderness, and excess hair growth. These were mild and faded over time.
A dose of 2.5 mg per day of finasteride seems to achieve the same results as 5 mg per day for women—and with fewer side effects. However, more research
